2. The seminar “Extensive Reading in the English Language Classroom” is being organised by The British Embassy, the British Council and the OUP at the British Ambassador’s residence - Villa Wolkonsky - on Thursday 7 July 2011 at 15.30 hours. The project is aimed at Italian teachers of English.
A Brief Outline of the Project:
Teachers on the programme receive a mobile library of graded fiction and non-fiction readers. They are free to choose which class would most benefit from the scheme and it is best to limit the library to one group of students in middle to upper school who have the independence and maturity to benefit most from the programme’s range of books. Once, the scheme is established in a school, more teachers can become involved with their own libraries.
The programme provides four to five books for each student in the participating class ensuring that the borrowing system works smoothly. The books range from a heavily illustrated starter level with a vocabulary limited to 250 head- words and basic grammatical constructions through six further levels of increasing lexical, grammatical and syntactic complexity. The fiction includes both classic novels and modern stories. Most teachers who have worked with Extensive Reading find that student librarians are enthusiastic and efficient monitors of the lending process and it is rare that books are damaged or lost.
Extensive Reading is recognised as one of the best methods of stimulating effective language learning not only for second language acquisition but also for consolidating skills in the mother tongue.
To ensure a place at the seminar please send confirmation of your attendance to Christina Caughlan of Oxford University Press: Questo indirizzo e-mail è protetto dallo spam bot. Abilita Javascript per vederlo.
